Like most of the best recipes in life, it starts with butter. Delicious, golden butter. And the real stuff, none of that margarine shit.
To a half stick of melted butter, add one chopped sweet white onion. Saute for several minutes until onions are translucent and tender. Add 3 tablespoons of honey mustard and 2 heaping tablespoons of whole seed dijon mustard. For a tangier kick, add a spoonful of yellow mustard. Stir along with 1/8 cup heavy cream. Sprinkle 1/4 shredded mild cheddar and stir. Continue cooking on low heat while you prepare the sandwich.
In all honesty, this onion concoction is ready to eat at this point. We kept scooping it up with salt & vinegar chips, and it was delicious. That being said, the struggle is real (try to resist). You can either assemble the sandwich, wrap in foil, and bake in the oven at 350 for like 10-15 minutes, or grill the pretzel bun, add Muenster cheese slices, add ham, turkey (or lunch meats of your choice), and a scoop of onion yummy gooey goodness to each side of the bun. Put it all together, grill an additional couple of minutes.
We used a sweet maple turkey and honey ham – perfect for the creaminess (mmmm, creaminess) of the Muenster and the tang of the mustard. Quick, easy, and delicious! Any other thoughts where this oniony-mustardy mix could be used?
